Since January I am fortunate to count Jacco @jacco Since January I am fortunate to count Jacco @jaccohooikammer and Johan @jcw.de.bruijn as new friends. These two aesthetes live in the small village of Staphorst. They have made their houses into special places, resisting interior design uniformization. 𝘛𝘫𝘢, 𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘫𝘻𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘪𝘫 𝘦𝘭𝘬 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘶𝘳 𝘪𝘯 𝘕𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥. From floor to ceiling the interiors are filled with a joyful collection of folk and antique objects that have disappeared from everyday lives in the Netherlands. ⁣ ⁣ Every object brings a feeling, from Staffordshire dogs 🐶 amongst piles of dishware to Berlin wool work, crocheted curtains, ornamented tiles, a Jo Koster painting 🖼️ and ginormous armoires painted with faux wood veins. I believe Dagobert Peche and Michel de Klerk would like it here as much as I do.
Closing a day of captivating lectures and presenta Closing a day of captivating lectures and presentations at the Nederlandse Kostuumvereniging @kostuumvereniging (Dutch Costume Association) in Arnemuiden, a young woman appeared in traditional dress from the late 1700s. Once she took off her 𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘦 straw hat 👒 with ombré ribbons 🎀 it was possible to see her head cap / a construction made of starched and pinned layers of lace. On her forehead a golden voorhoofdsnaald is engraved with three swans 🦢. ⁣ ⁣ My journey through Zeeland continued - thanks to lovely Jacco & Johan @jaccohooikammer @jcw.de.bruijn - crossing the Zeelandbrug and strolling through Zierikzee, which is also my birthplace. I loved some of the houses🏠 for the beautiful proportion of windows, tall ceilings and black & white painted woodwork. There is a sublime house in Kloetinge, far away from big cities.
Delighted to have spent time looking again at some Delighted to have spent time looking again at some marvelous klederdracht items from the Collectie Centrum Nederland, thanks the generosity of curators 𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼 𝗛𝗼𝗼𝗶𝗸𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 @jaccohooikammer, 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗲 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗳 @rosaliesloof and 𝗝𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝗮𝘀𝗺𝗮 @prachtvandracht .⁣ ⁣ A close inspection of the costume pieces reveals many fascinating details, such as the stunning quality of the wool and linen fabrics, delicate hand painted chintz motives (one of my current obsessions!) and innumerable stitches 🧵on a bright yellow petticoat. I am touched by the high level of craft of these unknown makers. It is possible to find avant garde in tradition, as long as you have an eye 👁️ for it.

In recent years I have been increasingly intereste In recent years I have been increasingly interested in embroidery 🧵 and have started to fabricate my own collection of experimental pieces. While visiting Jankees Goud @jankees.goud - who collects Dutch traditional dress - I was struck by the inventiveness of the Axelse streekdracht. The costume is composed of a kraplap underpiece, embellished in the back and front in all different variations. Sometimes resembling a small stomacher, it is an ornamental collage made of beads, sequins, gold purl, buttons, chenille threads, tassels, trimmings and other junk. The costume was only complete with a scarf folded and shaped over a large piece of paper (blinking here to my RISD students) and pinned in place to give the silhouette dramatic high shoulders. Truly Viktor&Rolf avant l’heure!
